Breeding New Plant Varieties
Breeding new plant varieties is a time-intensive undertaking that requires great skill, experience, and knowledge. As a reward for this achievement, plant variety protection grants breeders an exclusive right to exploit the newly bred variety. Plant variety protection is important not only for the commercial interests of the breeder but also for the public at large. In light of climate change, the growing global population, the reduced availability of chemical aids, and the increased global mobility of pests, breeding new, adapted varieties is more important than ever.
Political support for plant variety protection also continues to be reaffirmed. At the end of 2021, the legislature of the European Union extended the duration of Community plant variety rights for the species groups of small fruit shrubs, flower bulbs, and ornamental woody plants, as well as certain asparagus varieties (Asparagus officinalis L.), by five years to 30 years.
