Meissner Bolte opened its UK office in 2019 and serves both local UK clients and international businesses represented by the Meissner Bolte Group for UK specific IP matters. We are based in the heart of the UK manufacturing belt. Our office is on the border of West Yorkshire and East Lancashire, conveniently placed between Leeds and Manchester.

Meissner Bolte UK supports clients across the region, from Derbyshire in the East Midlands through to West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cumbria and beyond.

Meet our UK IP team

Our UK team comprises UK chartered patent attorneys and UK chartered trade mark attorneys. We can advise on all matters of UK specific IP practice, including patents, designs, trade marks, and IP litigation. All of our chartered attorneys have rights of audience in Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) and our patent attorneys are also European patent attorneys.

Our patent team consists of Sam Giles, Dr. Andrew Parker, Janet Bray, Dr. Felix Letzelter, Dr. Lucy Pattenden and Adbi-Hasan Ahmed. Together they have expertise in physics, aeronautical engineering, chemistry and life sciences. Adbi and Lucy are part-qualified and working towards qualification.

Our trade mark team comprises Alexander Pickles, Silvana Milnes and Janet Bray. All are experts at managing UK and worldwide trade mark portfolios, as well as handling opposition and cancellation actions in the UK.

Sam Giles

Head of Patents and Designs

He has extensive experience of UK specific issues, notably in IPEC litigation involving both patents and designs, UK entitlement actions before the UKIPO, oppositions to post-grant UK patent amendment requests, UK post-grant amendments, UK specific software patenting practice, patent drafting and prosecution. He is known for targeted patent strategies where speedy UK resolution is required, as well as being adept at providing advice on design scope protection. He is also a European patent attorney – principally acting for our local clients in both European prosecution, and in opposition proceedings.

Alexander Pickles

Head of Trade Marks

He has a great deal of expertise in managing global portfolios of marks for large and small brands, as well as in contentious matters such as UK opposition and cancellation proceedings, and in IPEC litigation. Alexander is particularly adept at finding commercial solutions to complex multi-party disputes and is a proponent of dynamic filing strategies. He also focusses on unregistered rights which are unique to UK practice such as passing off and unregistered UK design rights.

Silvana Milnes

Chartered Trade Mark Attorney

Silvana has worked in our trade mark team since 2021 and is a chartered trade mark attorney. She is adept at matters of UK practice, and has been successful in developing strategies relating to one of the longest standing ongoing trade mark disputes in the UK. Silvana also has a growing advisory practice in relation to copyright. She is a fluent Spanish speaker of Peruvian descent and works with clients that are both local and international, particularly those in South America.

Janet Bray

Dual Chartered Patent and Trade Mark Attorney

Janet is a powerhouse of the IP profession being both a chartered patent attorney and a chartered trade mark attorney. With over 50 years of experience in the profession there is rarely any matter that her vast experience does not assist with. She assists both teams and is key to running our finance department.

Dr. Andrew Parker

Between UK and Germany

Andrew is based in Germany having grown up in Sheffield in the UK. He acts as a bridge between the offices and was instrumental in the setting up and early days of MBUK. Andrew is both a UK chartered patent attorney and a European patent attorney.

Investing in the future - Our training program

We are committed to developing the next generation of IP professionals. Adbi-Hasan Ahmed and Lucy Pattenden are well on the way to becoming a patent attorney having become part-qualified some time ago. They assist with the technical side of many matters. Adbi’s technical background is as an aerospace engineer and he typically assists with all engineering enquiries, whilst Lucy has a PhD in chemistry having first studied Natural Sciences with a broad range of technical subject matter.

Having already trained one attorney from the beginning to full-qualification, we are extremely proud of our training program and look forward to many others treading this path in the years ahead.

Our UK office in Hebden Bride is situated in West Yorkshire and is ideally placed to support industrial clients while offering access to major UK transport hubs such as Manchester airport - which we use for frequent attendance of international conferences such as INTA, PTMG, Marques and IP Days.
